Mariachi Garibaldi were honored by the San Diego City Council on December 8, 2009 for their successful cultural diplomacy visit to Vladivostok in late May - early June 2009. The day was declared "Mariachi Garibaldi Day" in San Diego. The Mariachi raised the tempo of the event by playing a song in Council chambers

Delegations & Events

December 8, 2009: San Diego City Council declares day to be “Mariachi Garibaldi Day” in San Diego in honor of their visit to Vladivostok.

September 2009: Doug Rider travels to Vladivostok on Sister Cities business in the company of a Methodist delegation from San Diego.

May 30 – June 7, 2009: 14-member San Diego mariachi band “Mariachi Garibaldi” visits Vladivostok and nearby cities on a cultural goodwill tour. Society works with US Consulate General in Vladivostok and local donors in San Diego to make this visit possible.

December 10 – 20, 2008: 5-person Open World Educators from Vladivostok in San Diego

October 6 - 9, 2008: Vadim Vladimirovich Glazunov – Chairman of Committee of Municipal Services, Vladivostok Duma – visits San Diego

November 3 – 11, 2007: 5-person Open World delegation from Vladivostok. The Theme was on Accountable Governance.

November 27 – December 3, 2006: Mayor Vladimir V. Nikolaev, his family, and 4 members of the City Administration visit San Diego. The Society hosts a reception in honor of the Mayor on the evening of November 28th.

June 29 - July 3, 2005: Society President David Edick Jr. and VP Tim Nader visit Vladivostok on the invitation of the Vladivostok City Administration and participate in "City Days" events celebrating Vladivostok's 145th birthday.

Spring 2005: Leonid A. Naumov IMTP FEBRAS visits San Diego on invitation of the Society to discuss undersea technologies and educational institution development.

June 29 – July 6, 2003: Vladivostok Girl’s Choir visits San Diego (31 – person delegation) and conducts a series of concerts. Choir delegates were home-hosted. This was a joint project with Methodist church congregations across San Diego.

June 5 - 13, 2003: 5-person Open World delegation of Environment Specialists from Russia

March 13 – 20, 2003: 5-person Open World delegation of Librarians from Russia

October 23 – 31, 2002: 5-person Open World delegation of Educators from Russia. Delegation included Prof. Grigory Kapranov from Ussuriisk Pedagogical Institute.

October 2001: Charles & Sheila Yates visit Vladivostok. Mr. Yates visits Valeria Zarutskaya, of the Vladivostok Philharmonic and gives a lecture to the students and faculty at the Vladivostok Music Academy.

August 6 – September 14, 2001: Russian Mini-Fellowship Trauma Program. 2 trauma specialists from Vladivostok (Dr. Dmitri Bondartchuk and Dr. Valerie Prikhodko) train at Scripps Mercy Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Michael Sise.

February 25, 2001: David Edick Jr., in the company of Prof. Carl Luna, hosts for dinner former President Yeltsin’s advisor of nationalities in Russia – Mr. Emil Pain.

September – October 2000: The Society supported Maegan Prentice’s 3-week visit to Vladivostok to interview Russian participants in the Pacific Rim Park Project in San Diego in 1998 in preparation for her book on the construction of the Park.

June 4, 2000: The Society hosts an Ice Cream Social at Pacific Rim Park on Shelter Island to raise funds in support of the Children’s Library of Primorskii Krai in Vladivostok.

June, July 1998: Fifteen architect students from Vladivostok to help build San Diego's Pacific Rim Park along with five architect students from Yantai (China) and two architect students from Mexico. This project was conceived and supervised by James Hubbell, co-founder of San Diego/Vladivostok Sister City Society.

January 1997: Thirteen social workers and psychologists came to San Diego from Vladivostok to learn about our social service agencies and volunteer programs. This project won a national award from Sister Cities International.

Spring 1996: Twenty-five Russian singers and dancers came to San Diego and performed at several concerts throughout the week.

Spring 1996: Globe Project with Junior Achievement sponsored a teacher exchange with Clairemont High School and Junior Achievement Staff in Vladivostok.

October 1994: Russian delegation came to open up Cultural Center at the World Trade Center. We also hosted the Pacific Rim Business Conference at the Horton Grand Hotel.

May 1994: Sister City delegation that went to Vladivostok to open up Cultural Center on June 6. American architect students and James Hubbell went to Vladivostok to build Soul and Earth Park.

June 1993: Fifteen Russians came to San Diego as an official Sister City business exchange.

January 1993: Mayor of Vladivostok and City Officials came to San Diego to participate in a business roundtable conference.

August 1992: Twenty-four San Diegans went to Vladivostok as an official Sister City exchange.

May 1992: 177-person delegation came from Vladivostok to explore business opportunities. Forty-six members of the delegation were from the Russian Pacific Fleet Song and Dance Troupe.

January 23, 1992: “Spacebridge” – a 2-way, award-winning, live video conference between large audiences of San Diegans gathered at Sea World Theater and Vladivostokians gathered at Gorky Theater.

September 1991: Vladivostok Mayor Yevgeny Blinov, City Council members, officials from the International Relations Committee (City of Vladivostok), and several businessmen came to sign the Sister City Agreement. Mayor Maureen O’Connor of San Diego and Mayor Blinov sign the Sister Cities Protocol on September 10, 1991. A trade fair was held at the U.S. Grant Hotel to promote goods and services of San Diego area companies to the Russian visitors
